Philippine medical tourism and retirement gets needed boost
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010Amidst all the worry brought about by the global financial crisis, there exists a silver lining for developing nations.
With the price tag of medical attention in developed countries becoming too steep, its citizens are traveling to developing nations for their treatment â and theyâre getting much more than what they bargained for.
Significantly lower fees, world class care and a vacation to boot â these make up the package for most overseas patients, which even when put together still costs considerably less than the sole treatment they would get back home. All this has come to be labeled under the banner of medical tourism and the Philippines is fast emerging as a major player in Asia.
Patients from the US, Europe, Australia and the Middle East have been traveling to the Philippines to avail of treatments at a fraction of the cost. From executive check-ups to cosmetic surgery to heart bypasses, the range of services offered in the country is as comprehensive as they are inexpensive. Top that off with spa visits and a local tour of the sights, then you have an unbeatable combination.
Given all these, the Philippines has been making its presence felt in the market in the last few years by organizing and participating in international conferences. Smaller scale conferences and hospital tours have also been organized with foreign and local press, travel agents and industry professionals to see what the Philippines has to offer the world.
The promotion of medical tourism is spearheaded by the Department of Tourism (DOT). Tourism Secretary Joseph Durano said that his department is pushing for medical tourism because it opens business-to-business opportunities among industry stakeholders. This leads further investments in hospitals, spas and other related businesses like hotels, malls and real estate.
In fact, Secretary Durano foresees that in five to ten years, the industry will be âten times biggerâ¦it (medical tourism) just requires a little push and when it gains momentum, it will have a life of its own.â
Tourism Undersecretary Cynthia Carrion also shares the same prediction: âIf we continue what we started, by 2012, weâll have as much as $3 billion.â
One of latest the promotional steps is the publishing of the latest travel guide that offers comprehensive and useful information for visitors navigating the world of Filipino health and wellness. Entitled Philippines: The Heart of Asia (The Official Medical and Wellness Travel Guide and Directory), the guide is an indispensable tool that provides medical travelers options on the most suitable places for healing, rest, relaxation and rejuvenation.
The booklet contains a wealth of articles, maps, directory information, a list of the countryâs best hospitals, spas, clinics, and more. Meant for both the seasoned and the first-time traveler, the travel guide is the definitive companion in the journey towards better wellness and health in the Philippines. Â It is also accessible through the website www.philippinesheartofasia.ph.
Published by Honors Integrated Marketing (HIM) Communications Inc. with medical tourism advocate Joyce Alumno at the helm of the editorial team, the âPhilippines: The Heart of Asiaâ is the official travel guide for medical and wellness tourism endorsed by DOT, DOH, and PPP Task Force. It will be released by the last quarter of this year. Â Booking deadline is extended until September 15, 2009.

Philippine Government: From Presidential to Parliamentary>?
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010The Philippines is divided by the in the issue regarding the Charter Change wherein there are efforts by the incumbent administration to the change its government structure from Presidential to Parliamentary. However, there are also efforts against this move. The administrations stronghold for pursuing this effort is that ‘parliamentary systems have more economic development’..on the contrary, changing the charter cost at least 2Billion pesos. Another thing is that the present President is being alleged that she cheated in the 2004 national Elections and the opposition said that the Charter Change is a way of the President to lengthen its stay in power.So..what do you think about this?
Philippine Education, what is your opinion?
Monday, July 5th, 2010It seems that the state of education in this country, even among top schools was geared to teaching into making graduates as mere efficient commodities for the economic machinery, rather than teaching or encouraging students how to build this nation.
The educational system seemed to disregard the value of Culture, Art, Literature in nation building so as to give it valuable ‘soul ‘. That is why most Filipinos are not supportive of artworks or have no passion for reading, and are easily manipulated by crass commercialism. it seemed the educational system had failed on these.
Do you agree or otherwise? What is your opinion?

Philippine PrePaid SIM-Card (Globe/Sart) Deactivation?
Saturday, July 3rd, 2010is so far after 6 (six) months… Our Swiss PrePaid SIM-Cards would be deactivated after 12 months, if you do not call (load will not be reduced).
Does anyone know if Globe and Smart have a longer (than 6 month) alternative SIM card? Or is there any other company who offers a SIM card for the Philippines that would stay activated if you don’t use it up to 12 months?
My wife and I travel to the Philippines once a year and would be happy, if we would not have to buy a new SIM card each time we arrive in the Philippines. (Would be nice if Globe and/or SIM would change their policies and leave the SIM card and load active to 12 months…)
We appreciate any hints and tips!
Thank you very much in advance!
Best Regards from Switzerland,
André
