The Nacionalista Party (NP) through its standard bearer Manny Villar raised the need to put more government support to small and medium enterprises in the country to avert the growing unemployment that has reached 15 million this year. NP spokesman and senatorial candidate Gilbert Remulla said more and more Filipinos are expected to lose their jobs in the coming years particularly the overseas Filipino workers because developed countries are still reeling from the impact of the global financial crisis. He said strengthening the capability of small and medium businesses in the country has always been the priority agenda of the Nacionalista Party as its standard bearer, Manny Villar believes that the sector is the driving force of the Philippine economy. “The local agriculture and industrial sectors have not been spared from the crisis and now face weakening exports and displacement of workers,” said Remulla. “The bloating number of unemployed Filipinos is leading to increased poverty and hunger and high drop-out rates among students”. Remulla said SMEs comprise 95 per cent of businesses in the country more than 95 per cent of businesses and full government support should be given to them to allow them to provide more jobs in the coming years. He said the government needs to infuse more funds to SMEs
